The PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test is the most common and reliable method of testing people for coronavirus. It involves taking mouth, throat or nasal swabs, extracting the RNA and then analysing it for genome segments of SARS-CoV-2. PCR tests are evaluated in the laboratory within 24 hours and are considered particularly reliable.
Time to test result: 24 hours from receipt of sample in the laboratory.
